Ebook About
In mid-1962, Playboy founder Hugh Hefner was given a partial transcript of an interview with Miles Davis. It covered jazz, of course, but it also included Davis’s ruminations on race, politics and culture. Fascinated, Hef sent the writer—future Pulitzer-Prize-winning author Alex Haley, an unknown at the time—back to glean even more opinion and insight from Davis. The resulting exchange, published in the September 1962 issue, became the first official Playboy Interview and kicked off a remarkable run of public inquisition that continues today—and that has featured just about every cultural titan of the last half century. To celebrate the Interview’s 50th anniversary, the editors of Playboy have culled 50 of its most (in)famous Interviews and will publish them over the course of 50 weekdays (from September 4, 2012 to November 12, 2012) via Amazon’s Kindle Direct platform. Here is the interview with the rock legends The Beatles from the February 1965 issue.

Book The Beatles: The Playboy Interview (50 Years of the Playboy Interview) Review :

Not much of an interview, really. I think the interviewer from Playboy was more determined to seem more sophisticated than the Beatles than he was interested to get anything of substance out of them. To be fair, two things worked against him. It was early in the game, and the Beatles were just light-weight madcaps, as far as anybody knew. The other thing was that he interviewed all four simultaneously. Probably not the best way to get much out of them. It's worth a read, but I wouldn't give it much weight beyond that.
This interview is a little less comprehensive than the normal Playboy interview because all four Beatles participate equally as a group which fits very well with their early image. Of course, each individual would have been worthy of an interview but at the time they were still handled as "The Beatles." The spirit of fun fans get from reading this is the same as watching the movie  A Hard Day's Night .There is not much new here for Beatles fans. They talk about life on the road, America, Liverpool and do a great deal of clowning around. Given the perspective of history, you can read into their comments some of the frustration with the unrelenting grind they were always in the middle of, but for the most part they perform completely as "The Beatles" were expected to perform. One of the truly surprising and exciting aspects of this interview is the interviewer himself is radio legend Jean Shepherd. Shepherd was a regular contributor to Playboy and was a superstar in his own right. His popular weekly show recounted stories of his life mixed with commentary of current events. He was a masterful observer of American culture. Most people will recognize him as the writer and narrator of the film  A Christmas Story  which was adapted from a book he had written called  In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash  (some of which was published in Playboy).Shepherd began his radio career about ten years earlier and his early radio work is influenced by the beat counter culture of Greenwich Village. He is about half a generation ahead of the Fab Four. This and being a media star in NYC put him in the perfect position to watch and comment on all things cultural including the growth of rock and roll. The interview takes place in early 1965 before the Beatles had stopped doing live shows. Shepherd spends some time with them trying to connect during a typical concert slog through city after city. In the middle of this Shepherd finally gets a chance to sit down with them.He is not intimidated by them nor gushing in his praise so he is able to keep the interview rolling along and extracts some interesting tidbits from each of the four, especially George and Paul. In his introduction (written in 1965) he explains that he had to spend some time warming up to the boys and they to him so things didn't always go smoothly. Most of the information from The Beatles is pretty routine but there is much to love here for fans of both Jean Shepherd and The Beatles.Because The Beatles have been immortalized everything here has already been digested and reformatted a million times. However, the combination of these five amazing talents has produced an important cultural document which is a worthy read for any fan of pop culture.
