If one ignores the excessive self-praise and the fawning hymns to both Taylor and Burton, one finds a moderately interesting account of the making of an absurdly troublesome movie. Objectivity is sadly lacking: characters (both on-screen and off) are presented as either saints or sinners. Burton, Taylor and Mankiewicz are saints, Harrison, Skouras and the 20th Century-Fox beancounters are sinners. The movie, whilst no masterpiece, has, for a weird assortment of reasons, interested me for more than 50 years. To anyone else with that level of interest, I'd recommend the book. Without it, don't bother. The book is hard to put down, once you read of all the travails Wanger had to submit to in making this 'epic' movie. It is a wonder that the movie was even able to be made, assembled, and released! He doesn't go into the tabloids SEX scandals that swirled about the making of the 'epic', nor did he venture into discussions on that matter in his writing.It is matter-of-fact diary in the day-to-day adventures in making the movie to the final days leading up to its release.The book makes you want to view the "movie/CLEOPATRA" again, just so that you can see what he describes in his 'diary'!
